The designs of these clocks have varied in delightful ways over the centuries and all of them have their own distinctive grace. The range of settings for these clocks makes each unique, and a pleasure to work on.
The lubricants for these clocks need to remain effective over a wide range of temperatures. They also need to resist emulsification in environments with high humidity.
The clock remains intact and in-situ. There is a visual inspection of cables, pulleys and ratchets. Surface oil and residues are removed and new lubricants added.
The movement is dismantled and taken to the workshop for full de-greasing and cleaning with suitable solvents. Bearing surfaces are inspected for wear, and bushes are manufactured if appropriate. The customer has the choice of bronze to match with the original, or sintered bronze to take advantage of the benefits of modern materials. Pulley systems are dismantled to assess wear and corrosion, and components replaced if appropriate. Links to the motion-work and bell hammer are also inspected and attended to if required.
Due to the bespoke nature of any restoration work with these types of clock, commissions are only undertaken following detailed discussions with the client and the full scope of works being fully understood by both parties. The restoration of these substantial clocks and return to full running order can be very worthwhile.
